“As the founder and president of the HIDDEN TRUTHS PROJECT, a nonprofit dedicated to using the arts to amplify the voices of those marginalized or silenced by disabilities, particularly epilepsy, I have gained an immense appreciation for the power of the arts. The arts can become a vital source of knowledge and play a crucial role in building a more inclusive society, where everyone has a contributing voice, and their story is worth being told.

Over the past decade, we have utilized various art forms—including visual arts, music, film, dance, and writing—to highlight the experiences of individuals with disabilities. These platforms have proven incredibly effective in raising awareness, engaging the public, and fostering dialogue about the challenges of living with a disability. This dialogue is essential to foster understanding about the complexities of many chronic conditions.

Despite scientific advancements in understanding epilepsy from diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives, there has been little progress in addressing the discrimination, stigma, and impact on the quality of life for those affected. Epilepsy funding lags behind other major neurological disorders relative to its prevalence, which may explain the lack of improvement in epilepsy outcomes over the past 30 years. One-third of individuals live with uncontrolled seizures, another third experience side effects from medication, and the remaining third have controlled seizures. Yet, even when seizures are controlled, the diagnosis of epilepsy carries significant consequences, including underemployment, missed educational opportunities, loss of independence, and various psychosocial issues.

Therefore, I was thrilled to learn that a participant from Hidden Truths had launched a theater company, HOUSE THEATER, with their inaugural project, "ABBY NORMAL," a musical about epilepsy.

Sandra Cruze, the playwright, poignantly asks: "Why this play? Why now?"

As a playwright, Sandra writes from a personal place. Her granddaughter has intractable epilepsy, one of the least understood and researched brain disorders in the country. Having read a rough draft of the script, I can attest that it is thoughtfully crafted, revealing the raw truths of epilepsy and the human impact of the disorder. Sandra’s experience with her granddaughter allows her to authentically depict the immense effect on family and friends who are desperately seeking a cure for their loved ones.

I eagerly await the completed production's debut on stage. I am optimistic that Sandra’s script, lyrics, and music will serve as a powerful platform to raise awareness and support for the neurodivergent community and all those facing the challenges of living with disabilities.”
